Established in 1882 at Lahore, the University of the Punjab is the largest and the oldest seat of higher learning in Pakistan. It was the first to be established in the sub-continent in Muslim majority area. The fact that two Nobel laureates are from this University speaks volumes for its academic and research excellence.

A proud alumnus of Punjab University, Har Gobind Khorana was a trailblazing biochemist who made groundbreaking contributions to genetic research. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1968 for his work on the genetic code and its function in protein synthesis. A distinguished alumnus of Punjab University, Abdus Salam was a visionary physicist who became the first Pakistani to win a Nobel Prize in Physics in 1979.
